1963–1985

THE BREZHNEV ERA. ART IN THE SLEEPING STATE, THAT HAS ONLY JUST ENDURED KHRUSHCHEV’S ACCIDENTALLY INITIATED STRUGGLE AGAINST ABSTRACT ART AND FORMALISM, BEGINS TO DEVELOP IN THE DIRECTION OF BOTH AESTHETIC SELF-VALUE AND SALONISM, AS WELL AS of PROVOCATIVE DECLARATION. IN LATVIA, THANKS TO RELATIVE LIBERALISM AND POSSIBILITIES AFFORDED BY THE ART DAYS FESTIVAL, THERE IS FRUITFUL INTERACTION BETWEEN THE TWO DIRECTIONS, ONE BALANCING THE OTHER. THIS IS WHY NO UNDERGROUND ART OF ANY NOTE APPEARS.
